A Day in the Life of a Wine Sommelier
Have you ever wondered what a day in the life of a wine sommelier must be like? If you know anything at all about wine you’ll know that this wine related job has more to it than meets the eye. What seems like a luxurious job to begin with may actually feel like very hard work when you learn more about it.
What kinds of hours does a wine sommelier work?
As you might imagine a wine sommelier does not work standard hours. This is not a nine to five job since they will often be checking stock and making orders to replenish the wine cellar during the day. The afternoon and evening may be spent serving customers and advising them on all kinds of different wines.
It is not difficult to see therefore that this life can involve many late nights, especially if you are required to recommend wines to customers during the evening service.
Is every day the same?
Not exactly! A day in the life of a wine sommelier can vary a lot. They can also work in a variety of situations, not just in restaurants. Some work for private sommelier services while others take up positions on cruise liners, recommending wine and food pairings to the passengers.
Part of a sommelier’s job is to stock up the wine cellar and ensure that it does not run out of any of the bottles of wine that are kept there. They also have to have an understanding of the menu with regard to which bottles will go with which dishes.
Sometimes they may go on trips to wineries and vineyards to learn more about specific types of wines and grapes. This enables them to travel far beyond their actual workplace from time to time.
What about dealing with the public?
This is something that a wine sommelier will do on a daily basis. They must learn to be tactful in dealing with customers too, since the customer’s beliefs will not always match those of the sommelier.
For example the sommelier may recommend a specific wine to bring out the best in a certain dish on the menu. They may have gone through endless tastings to choose just the right wine for the dish in question. But while most people know that red wine should be chosen with steak, not all customers like red wine. If a sommelier recommends a particular red wine to a customer and that person wants a white instead, the sommelier must respect the decision made by the customer. As you can imagine the job has its challenges as well as its delights, much like any other job does.
It would definitely be fair to say that no two days are the same in the life of a sommelier. While many of the same duties occur on various days, they can all vary depending on the workplace and how experienced the sommelier is. But a day in the life of a wine sommelier is never less than fascinating.
